Davenport and Shapiro Fine Art (www.davenportandshapiro.com) will present new works from LindaNewman Boughton’s “Civil War” series beginning Saturday, August 4that its East Hampton Gallery.
Boughton mixes what appear to be elements of photography, etching and pop art in what are actually pen drawings loosely based on MatthewBrady’s iconic civil war photos.
“Linda is an amazing portraitist,” says gallery Co-DirectorHoward Shapiro. “The works’ large size—theyare about five feet high—gives them an amazing combination of immediacy, gravitas and ironic humor.”
Originally a scenic artist painting sets and murals formovies (including One Fine Day, Fight Club and Austin Powers), Linda Boughton has evolved into a singularportraitist who can conjure up emotion and with a growing reputation among theHollywood cognoscenti.
Among the portraits in the series are Abraham Lincoln and MaryChestnut. “They are both haunting and ironic,” explains Co-Director LenDavenport. “Letter from Home captures all the poignancy of the lonely soldierfar from home. Once you’ve seen them, you’ll know why we had to exhibitthem. We’ve already had a strongreaction.”
Davenport and Shapiro is located on the alleyway around thecorner from Scoop du Jour. The galleryoffers an eclectic mix of quality contemporary and historic art. For moreinformation, contact:
