Todd James, Alexis Ross - Valmorbida & Co - November 13th 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Andy Valmorbida and PM Tenore are pleased to present Beyond Elegance, an exhibition of multimedia works by Todd James and Alexis Ross at 560 Washington Street, New York City, opening on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 from 6 PM – 9 PM, in collaboration with VistaJet, Bombardier and RVCA Artist Network Program.

Beyond Elegance features a diverse body of new works by visual artists Todd James and Alexis Ross. Best known for their tongue-in-cheek use of animation inspired imagery, both appropriate vernacular imagery in order to critique society in varying ways through their figural works. James creates striking, graphic paintings illuminated by a bright colors palette, while Ross incorporates vintage visual language, reminiscent of early twentieth century children’s literature.

James’ large scale canvases satirize contemporary socio-political landscape, pulling subject matter from world events and day-to-day situations. He filters serious themes of war, excess, and natural disasters through the veil of a deceptively innocent unselfconscious lines. Ross uses the narrative of “The Sexual Misadventures of Ronaldo the Great,” as a platform to illustrate a series of absurdist tableaus. The paintings are visually and psychologically compelling, revealing Ross’ background in set design and his interest in the fine line between fact and fantasy.

Andy Valmorbida is an art entrepreneur and a pioneer of the “pop-up” gallery model. Since 2006, he has created 23 pop-up exhibitions in cities around the world including: New York City; Cannes; Los Angeles; London; Milan; Moscow; Florence; Southampton; Miami; and Melbourne, with upcoming exhibitions in Hong Kong, Vienna and Sao Paulo. He is a member of the Serpentine Gallery’s council in London. An active curator, “Californication,” at the MUBE in Sao Paulo, marks his latest international exhibition.
